What is the difference between a category and a tag?

The category is what you are; tags are what you offer. One category, many tags.

  • Category — one per listing, chosen from a fixed list. It decides which browse pages you appear on.
  • Tags — as many as are useful, written by you. They add searchable words.

A bakery’s category is “Bakery”. Its tags are “sourdough, birthday cakes, gluten free, bolani, custom orders”.

Side by side

  • Category — one per listing, chosen from a fixed list, decides which browse pages you appear on.
  • Tags — as many as useful, written by you, add searchable words.

A worked example

A bakery. Category: Bakery. Tags: sourdough, birthday cakes, gluten free, bolani, custom orders, wedding cakes.

Getting the category wrong hides you from people browsing. Getting tags wrong only means you match fewer searches.
